About:
Where does nature come to an end and technology start? What do craft, 3D scanning, and 3D printing have in common? Is it possible to scan a tree and why to do so?
The Craft Lab 3D investigates the boundaries between the natural world, craft, and technology. We learn from nature, which is seen as a model of a self-regulating, perfect system. To take a closer look at it, we use the newest technologies – 3D scanning and 3D printing – which allow us to digitize, creatively transform and replicate its materials.
Our research project started at the very beginning of 2023 and it has been carried out since at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, in collaboration with Peel3 scanner distributor DPS Software. We invited students of different backgrounds to the project and juxtaposed their sensitivity, craft, and design skills with new technologies and the ceramic medium. Working in an interdisciplinary team, we analyzed selected creations of nature, scanned them, processed them in a 3D environment, and finally printed them out using the ceramic medium.
The intention of our research project is not to look for answers, but rather to ask questions. During the exhibition, we present the results of the past few months of work.
The purpose of Craft Lab 3D is to draw viewers' attention to nature as an endless source of inspiration. There are no useless elements out there – everything is for a reason, serves a specific function, and seeks balance. This is how we – as designers and artists – want to create our products and services – consciously and sustainably. We combine craftsmanship with the latest technologies and seek new ways of doing things that serve both people and the environment.
